Minutes later the baCk-up aircraft captained by Oosachov took off. This Bull carried a dummy FAB-1500 HE bomb. In the event the nuke-armed aircraft's targeting systems failed the back-up would change formation and become the flight leader, proceeding to the target range as planned while transmitting a series of tone-modulated radio signals to the Tu-4A until the predesignated bomb release time. The signals and the moment when the back-up aircraft dropped the dummy bomb would tell the crew ofthe Tu-4A when it was time to drop the real thing.
Then we watched as the dust and debris cloud grew; it quickly mounted right up to our own flight level and billowed out into a mushroom. There was every thinkable colour and shade to that cloud. I am lost for words to describe what I felt after I had dropped the bomb; I was perceiving the whole world, everything I could see, in a different way. I guess that was because I had my mind focused on this important mission which I could not fail for many days before the drop and it just shut out everything else.
The longest towed flight lasted 2 hours 30 minutes, including 2 hours 27 minutes with the engine shut down. Before making contact the fighters zeroed in on the bombers, using their ARK-5 automatic direction finders which worked with the bomber's 1RSB-70 radio used as a shortrange navigation system. During landing approach the fighters stayed connected right down to 300 m (984 ft). 8 miles) from the runway threshold and landed. The system was ultimately put to the test in two sessions of mock combat on 5th August 1952.
