Men over the age of thirty-five were sent to the divisions left in the east and men under that age were brought from those divisions to replace the older men. Ammunition and shells were stockpiled and plans prepared. Another conference was held on 27 December 1917 where a number of operations were proposed: ‘George’, an offensive near Armentieres, possibly combined with ‘George II’, an offensive near Ypres, ‘Mars’, an offensive in the Arras area and ‘Michael’, an offensive on both sides of St Quentin.
